What Is In Commercial Pet Food?

Best dry dog foods guide is intended to educate pet owners about the commercial pet foods on the market today, so with so many brands available no wonder people become confused which products to buy.

First, I think you should know the majority of brands consist of only the basic nutrients required by the Food and Drug Administration, but for all breeds this might not be providing the right portion of ingredients for all dogs.

Ingredient Portions In Most Brands

  • 90% Dry Matter
  • 10% Water

The Process of producing these commercial foods destroys toxins, but at the same time is also depleting the nutrients. These dry foods are your most inexpensive option and the lack of needing stored in a fridge is very convenient, but what is in your fur baby’s food which is not healthy for them?

Avoid These Ingredients

  • Corn
  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Barley
  • Gluten
  • Meat By Products
  • BHA ( Butylated Hydroxyanisole )
  • BHT ( Butylated Hydroxytoluene )
  • Ethoxyquin
  • Red 40
  • Blue 2
  • Yellow 5
  • 6-4 MIE
  • PG ( Propylene Glycol )
  • Rendered Fat

What You Want

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Zero Preservatives
  • USA Made
  • Human-Grade Ingredients ( Very Rare If Any Brands Use )

This information was shared from the Pet Safe website from the wellness vet Patrick Mahoney. You can read in more detail the good and the bad of commercial dry pet food, you also can learn about wet pet food as well in this article.

Pet owners love their dogs more than they love themselves most of the time

Vet Recommended

Of course every vet is not going to recommend the same brands, but this list is provided by the website Top Dog Tips research from the vets they wrote this article from.

  • Hills Science Diet
  • Royal Canin
  • Purina Pro Plan
  • Orijen
  • Wellness Natural Food For Dogs
  • Castor & Pollux
  • Iams Eukanuba
  • Nutro Ultra
  • The Honest Kitchen
  • Natural Balance

Beware even though these are the recommended brands by vets it does not mean you will not find any of the harmful ingredients in any of these pet foods. You will find it a challenge to find many brands which does not add artificial ingredients and preservatives in their products, but if you are going to feed your pet a commercial food, these are your best dry dog foods to consider.

Best Dry Puppy Foods

I could not omit sharing the best vet recommended brands for puppies with you, we all know how important it is for our puppies to get all the vitamins and minerals they require to grow healthy and strong.

  • Iams Proactive Health
  • Blue Buffalo
  • Earthborn Holistic Vantage
  • Iams Dry Puppy Food
  • Premium Protection

These brands of puppy foods were vet recommended by the website Therapy Pet and you can read in more detail about these brands on their website.

My Own Personal Experience

I will not mention the brand I have been feeding my eight-year-old Rottweiler since he was just a puppy, but I will share it is one of the recommended brands on the market which claims to be an all natural product healthy for dogs.

My dog now is developing skin tumors which really makes me sad and disappointed in this food brand, I paid the high price with the notion my pet would live a healthier and longer life. That is not the case, so in my mind I wasted a lot of money and sacrificed to provide him with what I thought was one of the best brands on the market today. Even though it might be too late for him, I had added a new pup to my home and I want the best for him. So right now I am weening them both off their kibbles and adding home cooked dog food diets instead, I really believe my new pup has a better chance of a longer, healthier life by making him my own dog food and treats.

Vet Recommended Guide

This recipe guide I found from a holistic vet for a 20 pound dog, so you can easily increase or decrease according to your dogs weight.

  • 1/4 Pound Protein
  • 1 Cup Brown Rice or Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 Cup Veggies
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • Only Add A Few Herb Leaves Per Day or 1 Teaspoon Brewed Tea

This is the recipe I am using for both of my dogs with very good results, you will find it will take time for them to adjust to eating this recipe and giving up their love for their kibbles at first. I already have noticed positive changes in both of my dogs, so I do have confidence this diet is going to be healthier for my dogs than the commercial dog food I have been using for years.

What About Treats?

I am also going to be researching for homemade easy dog treat recipes to share in future articles, so if preparing your pet these types of treats interest you visit my website often in the near future. You can also find articles on my Facebook page when you are on the website, so I hope your looking forward to recipes and are considering weening your pet of kibbles soon.

Precious Pets Recommendations

What Is On My Mind Today

I take my dog’s health just as serious and maybe even more serious than my own health; I was amazed how many more foods my dogs can eat than I can with my strict food intolerance and allergy diet. Many of the foods I am forced to eat are also safe for my dogs, and I am even saving money. You can buy a lot more veggies and protein in place of the high price you pay for all natural pet foods, so I hope my article today has you at the least considering cooking for your dogs instead of feeding them kibbles.

Thanks for the guide to best dry dog foods, Jeff. And for the list of best dry dog foods, too.

Personally, I prefer the recipes and natural foods you suggested. It is so much better for our fur friends, don’t you agree?

The list of natural foods and the vet recommended recipe looks great! I used to have a mini schnauzer. She has since passed years ago. And this breed has very sensitive skin. When I invite another fur friend into my life, my family and my home, I will refer to your page again to give the best food for the best friend. 🙂

    Thank You Timotheus

I am sorry for your loss of your four footed companion, I know how difficult it is to suddenly be without
    your faithful companion.

I do agree the natural recipes are the best way to care for your dog for a healthier and longer life, and in fact
I am right now seeing an improvement in my dogs in just a few weeks feeding them less dog food and more of the people
food which is healthy for them.

My dogs digestive systems are working so much more efficient, and plus their fur and skin has went from dry to moist and shiny.
You would be surprised all the longer it takes to make a big batch of homemade dog food, and you can freeze it to last longer.

I hope you add a new fur buddy in your life soon

Thanks for making people aware of many of the brands of kibble out there that may be good for your dogs. I do have to agree that a more holistic approach to feeding your dogs it so much better for them and the health benefit are tremendous. It really is hard to believe that the manufactures of dog food use so many different ingredients that are just not good for dogs. It is no wonder that so many dogs are ending up with cancer, even when you feel you are providing a good food for them.

    Jeff · August 21, 2019 at 10:35 am

After some research I realized you can’t just presume all natural pet foods are what they seem to be,
I have found some of those so-called natural dog foods actually contain chemical preservatives which
is known to contribute to activating cancer in dogs.

Cancer is taking our pets from us before their time now more than ever,
so pet owners must really read the ingredients on their pet foods.
